Fees on the Trail?

Are there any fees that you need to pay while thru hiking the AT…?

The Appalachian Mountain Club’s Huts in New Hampshire charge $72 for full service lodging (meals and a bunk) but a thru hiker can do work for stay or avoid them completely. Some shelters in Vermont and New Hampshire with caretakers charge less than $10 for a nights stay and they too are avoidable. Baxter State Park also charges for shelters and other lodging. BSP fees are harder for Thru hikers to avoid because Katahdin is in the park. There are no fees for just walking on the A.T.

I have instituted a nominal $1 fee for all hikers passing thru
NJ.
When you get to the Del. Water Gap just email me and I’ll tell
you where to send it.
TIA, LOL

There are many tent platforms in the White Mts area that now charge $8 a night. I stayed at some on my hike. I didnt stay in any huts. Depending on when you get there maine and vermont also have fee campsites. Then of course there is the Beer fee, in every town you come to.:cheers :smokin

We were lucky enough to get work for stay at two of the huts. But we saw a few hikers who didn’t. They instruct you to walk to a pay campsite which can be miles down hill. We paid the fees for the shelters in the Whites because the tent platforms were full. You can get a list of the stealth sites in the whites from the guys at the hostel in Glencliff. Tin Tin I believe got work for stay at every hut! We had no problem getting food at the huts for a dollar. Sometimes it was just bread (but a lot of bread!).
The Whites can be fun but dangerous. Harley died there about 6 days after we came through. We spent some time with him in the Notch on a break and then got the bad news. Enjoy the Whites but be prepared for bad weather some problems finding a place to spend the night.

If a campsite can be named on a list I think it cannot be considered a “Stealth Site” just a “Bootleg Site” and there a enough of them in the Whites that I never worry when heading out for an over night hike. If you truely want to “Stealth Camp” (away from water, the trail and any obviously previously used camp) then the possibilities are limitless.
