I’ve been doing a lot of research on trail hiking, but the one thing I’m still fuzzy on is how do I find people to hike with? I have lots of free time right now, but no one to hike with.

Join a local club. Here in Guilford County, NC, we have the Piedmont Hiking and Outing club. Join a trail Maintenance organization or conservation group. Get involved with scouts (I know alot of people’s attitude about scouts, but that’s a good way to get into the woods, plus you can affect young lives!). Maybe the best way to meet other hikers is to get out on the local trails. Interact with other hikers you meet. Tell us approximately where you live and maybe someone will respond near you!

I’m in Athens, GA. I have absolutely nothing going on until June 8th when my class starts. And even then I’m only taking one class so I’m going to have a good amount of free time during the summer. Hopefully some hiking opportunities will present themselves!

I had the same problem and decided if I wanted to hike as much as I want when I want I would have to just go by myself. At first I found it a bit lonely but I meet hikers every day and have come to love the solitude as much as the companionship. Just do it.

The Sierra Club has local chapters across the country with volunteer leaders (like me) who plan hikes and backpack trips. Trips sponsored by the local chapters are usually inexpensive (day hikes are often free). Participating in a few of these planned trips can be a great way to meet other hikers, and from there you can choose whether you want to keep participating on the planned Sierra Club trips or plan your own hikes or backpack trips with your new friends. Here is a link to the outings schedule for the Georgia chapter of the Sierra Club: http://georgia.sierraclub.org/outings/list.aspx
