How many filters replacements should i take for the “hiker filter” and will it be easy to find denatured alcohol on the A.T.

The only places we had trouble finding denatured alcohol last year were in Troutdale, VA and Catawba, VA. I think if we had checked out the hostel in Catawba we would have found it, though.

On the rest of the AT, it was readily available.

Denatured alcohol should be found everywhere along the AT. The hostels stock it, its found in gas stations and stores in gerneral throughout trail towns. The Hiker filter has a one-year no clog gurantee. It should last the entire length of the trip. I would suggest drinking directly from fast-moving streams or carrying a bottle of chemical treatment if you were to experience a malfunction with the filter.

Anthony, the Pur Hiker is a good filter but it WILL clog. Have a replacement ready to be sent to you somewhere along the trail. It has a pre-filter at the end of the intake hose which helps too. I actually got a piece of my wife’s panty hose and used a rubber band to hold it around the pre-filter. That has helped quite a bit.
