Fire ban on CT lifted

FIRE UPDATE!

I have had an e-mail conversation going this weekend with some of the FS folks at the Rio Grande. They kicked it around a bit, and have decided that they will consider the CT a “border trail” so segments 22 and 23 are now open. Hikers need to remember that the fire is still going strong, and this could all change. Be sure to stay informed and prepared to change your plans if necessary.

We need to keep our access open to the newly reopened trail. Fire restriction remain in effect for much of the CT. In the affected areas, no open fires are allowed, including alcohol, esbit, or biomass stoves. Please be careful! out there. Monsoons are expected to begin in the San Juans in the next two weeks, so maybe things will change for the better.

To paraphrase what bearcreek said, the CT is now completely open from end to end! yippee!

Thank you for this update-- I will be starting on Sat. July 13 Southbound–it’s a relief to hear that the fires are at bay, at least for now!

Anyone know if the fire bans (as opposed to fire closure) have been lifted? It’s hard to get concrete info from the various government websites. For example, Lake county says they are in “stage zero” but when you click on the link explaining fire restrictions, only stage one through three are defined.

We want to use our alcohol stove on our hike, and don’t want to violate any open fire bans.

Thanks for your help!

This site is good to find firebans in Colorado.

According to this website, they are Stage 1 and ban stoves in Lake County. LPG and petroleum stoves allowed.

When in doubt, call the local office with the caveat that answers can vary.

If you are really in doubt, a canister stove may be good.

Just spoke with the sheriff office in Lake county. No fire ban. This is also on their website listed as “stage: none” The link on the coemergency.com website is out of date, apparently.
