I hiked from Sonora Pass to Sierra City last summer and there was not any fire damage in that area.

From what I hear, Sierra City is such a small town because everybody there hates people and want to be left alone. So definitely hitch your way around that miserable place.
(Kidding. This is advice I actually got and ignored. I found Sierra City to be a wonderful place.)
