Can it be true? A PCT thru-hiker started a brush fire? I saw the smoke from my house in cherry valley, 20 miles to the west on thursday. wife said “looks like whitewater canyon to me”…no,I said, maybe the Morongo Indian Res. again…wife is right again…o well…The local newspaper claims 1,185 acres burned by thursday night. And a woman from Ohio was issued a ticket, and could be sent a bill for 450 firefighters, 9 water dropping helicopters and 10 fire engines with crews. this bill could sent her cost per mile wayyy high… I haven’t seen any posts on fire saftey. I think the time has come for a few…

We follow the pct list and it seems there have been 2 fires. You are talking about the cooking fire (we read the Sacramento Bee story http://www.sacbee.com/state_wire/story/9276520p-10201455c.html
and it was in our Valley Times SF bay area paper on Wednesday)and in journal entries (Blue Moon and Mat MacDonald) of May 7 there were stories of a burning TP-started fire.

DO NOT burn TP when it is windy!

We use a Snow Peak Giga Power stove and have kicked it over, once in the tent. The stove rolled, flames shot up as we both grabbed for it. No damage was done to our borrowed tent but it made us think seriously about stove safty. If a coke can stove is kicked over will the burning fuel run?

This seems like another dry fire prone year.

The name of the local paper is “The Press-Enterprise” Section B, front page labeled “Local” it has a picture of waterdropping helicopter in action, the caption over the photo is “another blaze strikes near whitewater canyon” I only wrote about one fire, but the article briefly stated “firefighters put out a 75-acre blaze last Friday east of a popular trout farm where families go to fish and picnic.” it also states that “It’s the second fire in less than a week started by hikers in the Whitewater Canyon area.” hope this helps…dahmer
