Hey- With pike forest closed and the CT closed up to Georgia Pass in section 6, any Ideas on
A. Transportation to georgia pass from denver to bypass fire,
B. Alternate hikes, (IE: Hike south to north, other approximate 6 week trails or trail sections that I could get maps for/ prepare drop boxes for in 3-4 days…)
C. Other options…
Oh well, We will probably just skip sections 1-6 and shorten our trip by a week and 100 miles…

that’s a bummer about the closure. i just got off the trail. i made it to buena vista and just had enough. i was going solo and got really lonley. section 6 was probably the most beautiful. amazing views of south park at the end of section 5, and the continental divide on section 6. i would just hitch hike to avoid these sections. i never did it before and had wonderful success. the people in summit county are awesome. everyone is an outdoor person and knows what it’s like. i would love to finish the second half of the trail starting this weekend but have nobody to do it with. any suggestions?

Well I was leaving sunday On my way to say farewell Sat. to my friends in the next town A major fire broke out where I was staying with my friend. That was a couple of days ago. Now I notice the first 6 sections are closed and perhaps more the Pike/San Isabel forest closure efectively blocks more than sections 1-6 I believe but I need to double check that. Gee quit your job to go for a hike does not always work I suppose lol.

We are going to start at copper mountain on the 15th and go south…
Incidently, how did the data book do as far as water supplies with the drought?

the book was pretty on when it cam eto water. i only had one section (it was section 11 or 12 i think. the rest of my guide is at a post office in buena vista right now!) that was very dry and the guide had a full cup. i ended filling up mmy i liter bittle with capfuls of water! just out of curiosity, how much water do you guys carry at one time? i was carrying anywhere from 1 to 3 liters. searle pass near coppor should be o.k. just expect a bit of snoww and some hard route finding. i skipped that section and went straight to tennesse pass afer tring to get from coppor to breck and postholong up to my waist (and deeper at times!) this was during a snow storm last week (when sweeper was taking a rest day in town. lucky him!). once i got back on the trail the snow had covered my footprints and i had to navigate (map and compass) back to town. i ended up popping out in frisco and took the free shuttle to copper. if you need to take a rest day that is the place to do it. breck has a sweet rec center and free shuttles that go all over town, frisco, and copper. good luck! if any of you want to start in buena vista i will be going back this friday saturday!

That was one reason I was asking about the water supplies…
We are going to be prepared to carry up to 3-4 liters per person (6 people in our group), but Im hoping to be able to cut back to the minimum if the guide book/data book proves reliable. If it is, and there is water where they say water is at, then we will be able to cut to around 2 liters… I talked to the owner of the snowshoe lodge in creede and she said that the creeks were still flowing in her neck of the woods, so I am hopeful. Water and fire are the only things Im worried about for this trip… This will be our groups longest trip ever, (one other time did a 8 day trip in smokey mtns.), with everyone except me and my wife under 20 yrs old and 1 girl who has never been backpacking before. (NO, you cant bring your hairdryer!)
:>
anyway, I shall cease my rambling…

PS: thanks for the water info! Hope you find a pardner!

I would start in Breckenridge if you can, the climb up and down into Copper is nice. It is too bad the trail is closed, if you skip that section your are missing some nice hiking, but not the best part of the trail.

There are also the spurs off of the trails you could do if you are looking for some extra hiking. I don’t know much about them… but you could explore.

Best of luck!
