I am currently a section/day/overnight/get-a-few-miles-in-where-I-can hiker. This past weekend I finished my first 100 miles of the AT at Buzzard Rock on Whitetop Mountain! Only 2074 to go.

I have about 1750 or so miles left.

My problem is that since I live in Maine, I keep hiking the same parts over and over again.

I’m sure I’ve got 1500 total miles just hiking in Maine, probably lots more.

Does that count?

My section hiking on the AT started in 1976. I now have only 400 miles to finish. That is a section from Clingman’s Dome in the Smokies almost to the GA border and from Mt. Washington north to Katadin. It has helped that in that time I lived in Raleigh, NC; Washington, DC (twice); and Amherst, MA, but it still means long commutes to do some sections. It did not help that I lived in AZ for 16 years and am now back in the West. I am hoping to finish before I turn 60!

After a slow start in 2003, my buddy and I are getting in over 100 miles each year. No easy matter since he lives near Boston and I’m in Central PA. Not to mention working around coaching baseball & football and other family activities.

To date, we’ve hiked from Front Royal to Duncannon, and from DWG to Tyringham, MA. 426 miles. But I still remember crossing 100 miles somewhere in New York. Heck…I still remember finishing our first state (NJ)!

Our joke is that one of us will end up finishing this section hike of the AT as a memorial to the other one.

Trekking Trav, slow and steady win the race. I’m also a section hiker started in '94 on the Approach Trail to Springer. I have hiked the trail in contiunous sections and this summer will hopefully reach Shenandoah NP. That will be a total of over 800 miles since '94. As Turtle Walking said, “it still means long commutes”. I live in the Atlanta area, thinking about catching a bus up to Roanoke for this section. It is a long commute up there.
