This summer will be the first time I hike the Appalachian Trail. I am planning on starting along the New Jersey Pennsylvania border and finishing in New York. How are the trail conditions and how well are they marked? Is this part of the trail quiet and have good views?

The AT is like a hiking super-highway which makes it very well marked and easy to file.

The hike from Del Water Gap to Harriman State Park is a nice way to start. Bear sitings are frequent. There is a marshy area with a long bog bridge, so you’ll need bugspray and/or a headnet. Enjoy a stop at Sunfish pond, and I recommend a stop a the Mohican Outdoor Center. Enjoy!

This strecth has some awesome areas, above mentioned marsh right befor Vernon, ‘Desperados’ strecth of trail…you’ll know him when you get there if you dont already. Mohicain Outdoor center area. Sunrise Pavillion area–the 15 or so miles before and after are sweet and beauiful piney woods. high point area…all good stuff. I found Jersey ot be a very pretty stretch of trail over all.

There are a few lakes to jump in and–depending on where in New York you finish. This has been a dry year and New York is notoriously dry…thank god for the caches of water that are left around some places.

Jersey over all is nice hiking, you got Sunfish pond area, sure there are still some rocks and stuff…but thats the AT.

Enjoy.
