Fishing on the JMT

Has anyone hiked the JMT and fished along the way? If so, what type of equipment and flies did you use. I’d love to do some fly fishing but I’m a North Carolina boy who only has fishing knowledge in the mountains of the Blue Ridge.

there are SO MANY FISH… I didn’t fish, but some spots I swore I could empty out my pack and scoop some up. I hear they’re pretty smart though. I’d bring a spoon or spinner - something shiny, but I’m like you - blue ridge fisher. I think more like a bass more than a golden trout.

Good luck

Last September my partners and I hiked a 60 mile loop inside Yosemite. We camped at OttoWay Lake just before Red Peak Pass.Tha Wookie is right, the trout were so thick,I got tired of catching and releasing them.Usually, the trout will strike anything that resembles a mesquito with a size 14 or smaller hook. Also make sure you have plenty of backing on your reel, the bigger ones like to run.I have a sectioned 7 foot flyrod that breakes down into 1 foot sections. It fits perfectly in my backpack inside a tube container, also very light.Good luck on your hike and, enjoy yourself.:cheers
