I don’t need any facilities, and i’ll actually have a car. So if someone knows just a quiet area in the national forest that i could just pull over and walk out into the woods to camp, that’s good too.

I hope you hear from someone who knows better than I do. When I walked through there on the AZT, it looked like there might be some informal camping sites near Shultz Pass/Shultz Tank north of town. There is definitely a developed trailhead at the bottom of the Kachina Trail where you could park and walk up into the woods. I’m sure there are more, and you could find out at a local outfitter or ranger station if you don’t hear more here.

Forest roads 151, 418, and Schultz Pass north of the city all have dispersed camping, or there is also a campground not too far south of Flag on Lake Mary Rd. called the Canyon Vista CG.

there is also an excellent hostel - the grand canyon hostel - in town. Stayed there in 2001 while hiking/biking in az.
