Flashlights - Appalachian Trail

I am afraid that my flashlights are hopelessly out of date. Should I carry the LED gizmo’s or stick with the regular bulb type? Does anybody still use the Maglite with 2AA batteries? 2C’s even? Is it really helpful to have the kind that straps to your head? Does it matter which brand? See you at the Sidetrack.

I’d get the LED type because of weight and battery life. It’s much easier to rummage through a pack in the dark with both hands than with one holding a Maglite, so yes, the head straps are helpful. Brand really doesn’t matter, although look at something like the Black Diamond ION that doesn’t have an external battery pack which weights more.

I used one of those little keychain size LED things tied on a nylon string lanyard last year. It worked OK, but in hindsight, an LED headlamp would have been nicer at times, especially for things like cooking in the dark where you need both hands and light. Unless you just want a huge amount of light, LEDs are definitely the way to go.

take a roach clip (sold as alligator clip) and screw it into the keyring hole of a keychain light(get one with a switch). Then you can clip it to your hat, bandana, hair, shirt, that tree over there, whatever. Just don’t lose it. Weighs nothing, takes no room, and is more functional than any headlamp.

Wookie,
And during day time, your roach clip could be used for other uses, eh??

I got my LED headlamp at Wal-Mart for $12. It is made by energizer, so came with the batteries. Uses 3 AAAs and has a battery life of 50 hours. It also has both white and red LEDs. The red are good for reading at night and doesn’t kill your night vision.

The clip has many uses.

Get a LED headlamp. They are very very light, batteries last a long long time. I love mine. Carry a small backup light if you want, might be a good idea (one of those mini flashlight).

My LED headlamp is a Peltz I believe. A little expensive, but worth every penny.

See you out there.:cheers

Ever thing to try a good old fashioned Lime Light? How about a good ol’ carbide lamp?

Quothe ye as the yonder sparrow,
finds his way hither and tither;
Yet the corridor is dark and narrow,
he might not make it to the shither.
