I’ve seen on the news lately that Maine, NH, and Mass. have been hit with a tremendous amount of rain. How will this affect southbounders? I am starting my hike on June 15th.

Even those who hiked in 2003, Jimbo, might be surprised to see the pictures of some towns in MA this past week. Yes, there have been RECORD amounts of rain and yes, sections of some towns have been flooded and even evacuated. This is mostly, from what I’ve seen, northeastern MA–though I’m sure with the amounts of rain the state has had, the trail will be MUDDY and may even seen it’s share of flooded sections. I really can’t say for sure. However, if you’re not starting until June 15th, I’m guessing you should be fine unless the rains continue.

Last year the Katrina rains came through and the creeks and rivers were very swollen in Maine. A few days later it was much better and passable. Anytime it rains up there the waterways you have to ford are a little more challenging. Have a great hike.

The creeks are allready coming down and in a week water levels should be back to normal if we do not get much more rain. The towns that got flooded are putting things back together quickly and most roads are reopening. When we get heavy rains up here the smaller brooks that the AT crosses usually go down in a day or two. There may be some wash out areas on the trail but I haven’t heard of any yet. There was not much wind with these storms so blow downs should not be a problem and any major ones will be cleared by the time you get down here.
