Any opinions on these silly little things? I’m guessing i won’t buy one…but should i? Am i a fool for not buying one? Or am I a thrifty little monkey?

but what will save your floorsaver from the wear and tear of the trail? any groundcloth will do, or tyvek for a light wieght solution. cut to the size of tent. spend that money on beer or drugs.

i wouldn’t bother with a groundcloth for your tent. Your tent will last the duration of trail.

Well, I for one, use one. It doesn’t need to be the coated nylon one sold by the tent manufacturer. It can be heavy plastic or tyvek. It also does double duty when I spread it out in shelters underneith my sleeping bag. Helps keep the bag cleaner.
One option with the floor saver made by tent manufacturers is that you can eliminate the inner tent part and just use the floor saver, poles, and fly, assuming it’s not buggy.

I use a tarp… and for tarp users you definately need something to lay under your therma rest (or whatever you use). I cut heavy duty plastic a couple inches longer than my pad on each side. When it rains I figure the path of the water and use twigs to lift the edge of the cloth that faces the water.

I bought an 8X12 1 mil painter’s plastic drop cloth and
made (3) 8X4 ‘groundcloths’. They hold up very well, and
a large tear can be fixed with duct tape. Don’t worry about
small holes. Weight about 1.5 oz, if I remember right.
Maildrop them to yourself every 700 miles.

REI sells a 6x9 green tarp for 5 bucks. I cut it out to fit the footprint of my tent.

We used a piece of tyvek and it lasted the entire hike. We used it in the shelters also. We had to wash it a couple of times it got to smelling bad from the dampness.
