Following fall SOBO

Hi all again
I am exploring the possibility of thru hiking the LT following the progression of fall color southward over a three week period. Anyone out there having done this? Would Oct. 1 be a good start date ? Any ideas on how to get to the border start if not driving?

In 2003 I started at Appalachian Gap on October 9th and finished in Massachusetts on October 20th. The fall colors were great. It seemed like I followed the peak foliage south. Eventually some of the color lost when a nor’easter with heavy rain and wind blew some of the leaves to the ground. You should be prepared for rain along with the cool weather. It rained on six days of my 12 day hike. The cool and dry days with clear blue skies over a blaze of color more than made up for getting wet once in a while. It stands as one of my most favorite long distance hikes.
I seem to be saying that a lot lately. I’m giving myself an itch to hike.

Ditto on the rain, celt. I can remember it from my September 2006 LT NOBO. It was wet, cold and slippery on MT Mansfield and I became a sailboat in my poncho on Jay Peak as the high winds blew a horizontal rain. However the sky blue morning I was first atop MT Abraham made the entire hike special and the clear view of Champlain and the Whites on Camel’s Hump I will never forget. I hear the Greens a calling me back.
