So what is the deal with Fontana Dam? I've heard that it will be closed for this year's northbounders. From what I hear we will have to take a detour around the dam and into the Smokies. Any truth to this?

“TRAIL CLOSURE: Fontana Dam crossing closed for repairs - Dam is closed to all foot and vehicle traffic while repairs are completed. Hikers must use the blue-blazed dam bypass trail that crosses the Little Tennessee River on NC Rt. 28, downstream of the dam. Mostly on paved or dirt roads, this alternate route starts (at the south end) between the picnic area and the visitor center and adds approximately 2 miles and several hundred feet of elevation gain and loss. Follow posted signs; those trespassing on the dam will receive a federal citation. The work is expected to be completed by the end of March. (Posted 02/08/0”
