Food in shelters

heres a good reason not leave any food behind at a shelter This is from Hydros Journal
" … was a skunk munching on the dog food left in the corner of the shelter. Since I don’t want to get sprayed, I leave the skunk to it’s business as I am a good distance away from it, up in the top bunk of the shelter. But come 6am when I have to go to the bathroom and the skunk is still hanging out, I realize that we must have a confrontation. I crash around my gear and shine the light, nothing phases the skunk. I try talking to it, it won’t leave. Then I all out scream “get out of here,” and it jumps off the shelter and hides, only to return seconds later. We repeat this yelling and running away ritual about six times before the skunk leaves for good. I avoid being sprayed, but I am sure I terrified any hikers that may have been camping in the area"

We were supposed to spend the night at Woods Hole Shelter, but after reading how far it was off trail and being so early in the afternoon, we decided to push on up Blood Mtn. At the shelter up top, we found a large sign written on cardboard that a skunk liked to visit each night, and it somehow managed to get past the wood panel barricade put up on the door. So, with that it mind, we pushed farther down to Walasi Yi for the night. Probably better, we learned later on another hiker did spend the night up there puking his guts out all night.

Better safe then sprayed

We had a skunk visit us in that same shelter (Big Bald) in 03. It was a baby skunk coming in out of the snow. He actually curled up and slept at the foot of someones sleeping bag. I guess the little guy grew up and is still hanging around.

Don’t stay in shelters. They suck. They’re dirty, mice ridden, and cold. You’ve got thousands of acres of soft earth around you to lay out. Why anybody hikes all day to sleep in a filthy box at night is a mystery.

I agree with Lone Wolf - there’s some nasty shelters out there.:girl

Staying away from shelters is no sure thing either. My only skunk encounter came tenting all by myself in the middle of nowhere. A skunk laid siege to my tent and finally had me beating a retreat.
