Food Storage @ Tuolumne

Flying into Mammoth July 20th, so excited! Was thinking of bussing to Tuolomne, putting food in bear box there, and then starting from Yosemite Valley, picking it up a few days later, just to lighten the load. Is this allowed? Should I leave a note? Has anyone ever had any problems doing this?

I kept food there for 10 days on my PCT hike 2 years ago. I went in to the adjacent wilderness permit office to ask them about it, and so they knew not to clear out my food. They told me a specific box number to use. Call the wilderness permit office in advance to be sure you can do this though.

You might consider mailing your resupply package to Tuolumne. There is a post office there so the cost is much cheaper than the resupply costs down the trail at Red’s, VVR and MTR. Just mail it to yourself c/o General Deliver, Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite National Park, CA 95389. You’ll be passing the store, grill, Post office building anyway on your way through. They are closed Sun and are only open 9-12 on Sat. 9-5 during the week. A large size priority mail box cost me about $15.00 to ship there last year from Los Angeles. YMMV
