Food...strawberries?...ham?

i was wondering if anyone knows where to purchase freeze dried STRAWBERRIES…(like the kind that are in some cereals like ‘special k’)…we really enjoyed that type of cereal on the trail last year as the strawberries ‘came back’ almost like fresh!..but cereals are expensive and we’d prefer to make our own if we could find that quality of strawberry, (perhaps in bulk)…also, on our ‘03 hike we once purchased (at the kroger in waynesboro, i think), some pretty good tasting HAM IN FOIL PACKETS (which we added to mac’n’ cheese)…i’ve looked everywhere and can’t find that ham!..(plenty of tuna, chicken or salmon, but not the ham!)…if someone knows where you could order this, i would appreciate it…(we don’t have a kroger in our town)

Just Tomatoes makes FD strawberries, also look for “Cereal Toppers” in the cereal aisle, they are also good. Do you have Trader Joe’s nearby? They sell them in tubs for less than $3. Best I have had, and cheapest around!

you don’t need fancy ham to pack with you. I carried it all the time. I’d buy two packages at the grocery store that were vacuum-sealed. if it’s sealed like that, the meat will stay fine. i remember in 90+ degrees out, not opening one package until three or four days later and eating it. no worries. summer sausage can stay at room temperature, too. also hard salami stayed really well, just greacy.

Pepperoni lasts awhile as well…especially if you can find the stick variety. Someone else mentioned the sharp sharp cheddar blocks in another thread. In warm weather hikes anymore I leave my stove at home…less weight on these old hips.

Maw-ee, How you doing up on Lookout Mt.? The place to get f-d fruits, veggies, and meat is Emergency Essentials, beprepared.com. I took f-d blueberries, strawberries, peaches, and cinnamon apples last year and loved them. I also bought ham (way too salty), chicken, and roast beef; also tomatoes, peas, broccoli, asparagus, etc. The stuff comes in #10 cans. Y’all doing another thru-hike this year?

Hope to see you again, maybe at Trail Days. Mango
