i drove down to davenport gap yesterday to snoop around a little bit. it is exit 451 off I-40 in tennessee. the first exit in tennessee. waterville road. take a left at the bottom of the ramp and just follow the road around across the river, past where the AT comes down out of the woods, pass the energy plant, and mountain mommas is a little further on the left. it is closed on mondays and tuesdays during this time of year. i tried to drive around to davenport gap, but found the road to be impassable. so, i turned around and parked at the trailhead at waterville road and hiked in about a mile. didn’t see any fresh footprints in the snow (which was only ankle deep where i was), so i turned around and headed back to the car. i left a note for bono attached to a tree at the trailhead. i also drove up to the standing bear farm hostel and chatted with curtis (owner and operator) for a while and left a note for bono there, in case he should happen upon the place.
i figure bono should be out of the smokies today or tomorrow at the latest. hopefully we’ll hear from him soon.
svgklingon- i’m in weaverville, so if you want to head that way together or towards max patch, let me know.
