How does Amazon offer this for free without stealing from the authors of the book? Giving away an ebook seems like a bad deal for everyone. Readers value it less and the authors get nothing at all and that seems unfair if not openly unethical. I mean, I've taken chances on free ebooks before and gotten what I've paid for, but this is a $25 book now being given away.
How does this work?

Many authors offer their ebooks free for a brief time to get some readers to read and (hopefully) leave a review (again, a hopefully positive review). It is inexpensive advertising and generates some reviews and interest in their work. It is generally expected that if a reader takes a book for free, they leave a review. Win/win! Author gets some good reviews, reader gets to read a good book from a new author, and the author gets a new fan, who hopefully buys the next book the author writes.
