Can someone please guide me to a good free public e-mail acccount. What are some of the features such as POP and IMAP? In short I am looking for an account I can access on the trail at the local internet sites available along the way.
Thank you

hotmail.com or gmail.com. I have an account from both. They both are good.

Gmail is the best email account on the web.
Hotmail is free
juno is free
I think AOL is free
There are other ones
But gmail is your best bet

I would definitely use gmail. It saves all your e-mail, you can organize them into folders, set e-mail filters so things automatically go to different folders…would definitely be good for hikers who have other people checking their e-mails!

…you may want to think about avoiding gmail. Not that I’m going to make a case for why any other free email site is a better business practicioner, but I will say that Google has some very shady business practices with regards to its set-up and operation in China. It has been quite complicit and and cooperative in the crackdown of numerous dicident movements the Chinese consider to be anti-Chinese. This includes but is not limited to big-time help in squashing free-Tibet movements and other human rights groups.

Something to consider at least…

Try care2.com. Their email package has the same types of features as hotmail etc, but they are all about saving the earth - their ads are for things like “sign this petition to stop global warming”, for example. Check it out. An added bonus - because it’s not well known, the spammers don’t hit it.

I used to get 25 spam a day at my hotmail account (until they closed my account without warning because I hadn’t checked it in 30 days, arg, I lost all of my addresses!).

Booo hotmail! Yayyy care2!!

My two cents.

Even though I have a hotmail account, it gets too much spam and the 30 day no-use period when you lose everything is a pain in the butt. go with gmail or yahoo, both work well and are free
