A question for you thru-hikers

  • if you got to camp and somebody had a meal prepared for you already would you eat it, and what would you want it to be?

(i am asking this because i’m hoping to do a service project on the trail that would consist of some friends and i hiking into some camps early and cooking meals for the people staying there)

If I were to hike into a camp and find a meal prepared, I would certainly eat it! If I got to choose the meal? Wow…I would select fresh foods such as salads loaded with garden vegies, in season fruits, milk, ice cream, and a filet mignon accompanied by a baked potato. A vegetable stew would be nice as would chili. Having just completed my thru-hike on 9/19, I am burned out on any kind of energy bar, candy bar,or any type of noodle. :girl

There is a very small minority of hikers who believe the AT should be a “complete wilderness experience”, and that people giving free food take away from that experience. Most hikers will not think that, but you may want to at least be aware that that sentiment exists.

With that being said, 99% of hikers would love a free cooked meal! Personally, my favorite meals on the trail were when we would bbq over a camp fire. Burgers, hot dogs, chips, soda, salad all go over very well. And believe me, it is a wonderful experience both to receive free food and to give free food to weary hikers.

I think it is a very nice idea. And both you and the hikers will get a lot out of it.

Fresh fruit was a big craving on the trail. I also craved root beer. But to be honest, any meal I didn’t have to cook was heaven!!!

Chocolate milk was always the first thing I went for in a town. Weird.

anytime someone offered I’d take it, well… nearly. Certainly it wouldn’t be the safety factor that would cause hesitation, because in my experience you can trust those around you. The only reason I might not take it is I’m just plain tired of eating that particular type of food.
