Lets hope this post is a spoof.

The last thing the Trail Community needs is a bunch of thru hikers partaking of 10 cent beers.

Why not?

I like to be more optomistic. I’m sure (21 and over) hikers can handle a few beers. Bennington is not Damascus nor do we want to be. I bet we are lucky if 30 hikers show up.

No ‘Newshound’ this is not a spoof. Don’t come if you can’t handle the reposibilty of drinking a couple of beers.

You try to do something nice for hikers and the first post is a complaint!!!

I’ve been working at outfitters on the trail for 8 years now. I have always tried to welcome hikers to my community. Now I’m in a great community on the trail that loves hikers. Volunteer based shuttle that runs twice dailey, FREE hiker bikes amongst the town, and free food and a movie. Yep, we plan on serving beer. Is it THAT bad? Christ.

Newshound, why don’t you try and say something nice. People like you are real downers. Always finding that one thing to complain about.

“The food is awful and such small portions”.

Go take a hike and chill out. And say something nice while you’re out there.

My 18 year old son is hiking the trail noso. He is in NH now. I don’t like to think he is out there drinking but I do appreciate this kind of effort and concern people have for the thru-hikers on the trail. It’s a tough challenge and a little help is always appreciated. Keep up the good work.

Waynesboro VA had it’s second annual Hiker Fest (same concept but small fee for the food) and our all vounteer Trail Angel Network gave free movie tickets. The first year we had it, I posted something here and like you, the first thing I got was a complaint. Didn’t like the fee, didn’t like the name, yada yada.

McDonalds is open till midnight for those who don’t care to join the 25 plus hikers who actually wanted to come and socialize and meet the towns volunteers who love them so much. Thankfully, those types are few.

I’m sure the event will be great. Just remember that anytime you post anything to the web that you risk get pot-shot. I’m sure that any of the fine young folks, like Kevin’s son, will make good decisions. Seeing as he’s now an 18 year old man, old enough to die in Iraq, I bet he can handle the situation. If not, then we need to bring home our teenage troops!

“why serve beer?”

After a 15 to 20 mile day, some folks (believe it or not) like to relax with a cold one. Besides, the beer is beng poured in the basement of the store. We can stop it at ANY point.

I happened to attend this event as I was in Bennington this evening. The primary sponsors of the event were the owner and staff of a great outdoor store in the center of Bennington called Nature’s Closet. Owner Steve and manager Brendan were wonderful hosts; excellent food was provided by two very hiker-friendly local restaurants, the South St. Cafe and the Rattlesnake Cafe. There was beer served. Nobody was overserved; many folks didn’t drink anyway; there were no problems that I saw, certainly no intoxicated or problem hikers. The small grassy area where the dinner took place looked better at the end of the night that at the beginning.

This was, in short, a really wonderful event, especially as there were a lot of Southbounders there who probably don’t see this sort of thing very often. Anyway, hats off to the good folks at Nature’s Closet and their other friends who helped out. Bennington is turning into a great Trail town and I hope more hikers stop there in the future.

Glad Bennington was such a success.
Nobody died and that’s a start.
For such a close-knit group, there likely could have been some better “looking out for each other” in Duncannon. One more hiker could be alive today if “organizers” and trail celebrities had been more careful and attentive to each other. And don’t give me that line about personal responsibility – we all need to look out for each other out there, in town or or the Trail or in everyday life off the trails. Someone needs to be big enough to step in and save a life.

Thanx for one more anonymous shot, Abe, we can always count on you. Were you at Duncannon, Abe? Do you know any more about the facts of the matter other than what you’ve heard on the Internet? Everyone that was in attendance at Duncannon felt bad about what happened there, but blaming the organizers or any particular individual (like me, for instance, yet you lack the balls to come out and say it) is simply wrong.

This is at least the third time I’ve said this: “Honest” Abe is anything but. I’ll ask him again to put his real name on his posts, especially when so many of them contain negative comments about others. If he doesn’t wish to do so, then I submit that his comments here and elsewhere are on the level of gutter-level bathrooom graffitti and should be treated as such. And he has he gall to say that someone needs to be “big enough to step in” …geez, Abe, that’s a laugh, as you aren’t even big enough to take responsibility for your own posts. A man ashamed of speaking his own name should be leery of speaking ill of anyone else.
