Hey all, just a quick question, I’ve been reading alot about rain gear lately, and I’ve heard some good things about them. I was just wondering for those of you that have them, which model did you choose? I was thinking the pro action? Any thoughts?

I love mine. I have used them on the AT and in the Alps and have been very pleased with the performance. Best raingear I ever used. I have the original zip - up in fashionable blue.

Yes they are great but not good in alot of brush or climbling rocks…They do dry very quick and are light…Happy trails

I’m interested in looking at Frogg Toggs - will be going to the Freeport area next week (Maine) - checking in at LL Bean. Is there anywhere in that area that I could check out Frogg Toggs???

Canuck, the frogg toggs are great…i have used them for about 3yrs…I warm up quick while hiking…so to help the air circulate better…i cut the elastic out of the jackets sleeves and pantlegs…works great…

My wife and I didn’t like the Rainshields (Very similar to Frogg Toggs) that we had. We tried pretty hard to like them, and their breathability was amazing. The pants durability was pretty weak. I shredded them fast. I used them for about 300 miles on the AT and Colorado Trail.

However, the real issue was wind. When the wind was going they just didn’t offer the protect a nylon-laminated gortex jacket does. They fit so poorly that the whipping around really annoyed us. And a good fitting hood is important to us in the wind.

In the end, I’d say they are good, especially if you don’t have the cash for an ultralight gortex jacket, but the weight of gortex jackets has come down significantly. I really love my event jacket by integral designs but found that it started leaking after about 1000 miles. In the end I will go with the lightest montebell gortex jacket they sell for my long distant backpacking… about 11 oz. For pants, the 7 oz montebell gortex pants. It’s expensive to be sure, but in the Rockies the extra durability and wind performance really beats the socks off anything else we’ve tried, and we’ve tried a lot of variations.

Thanks for the help all, I went for the toggs, when they get here(I’m stationed in Germany) I’ll try them out in the hills around here. I’m not doing the trail until I get out, so hopefully I’ll start around Mar 1 08.
Thanks again

Emm,
I know of nowhere in Maine you can buy these. I’ve only seen them for sale @ Trail Days or Damascus myself. They don’t come in small enough sizes for me.

thanks Bluebearee - can’t find them locally in Montreal - guess I could order them. I like to see stuff ‘in the flesh’ first as a rule!
Ok- I’ll be in Spain in the late Fall - guess no-one knows if they have them there?!

Gander Mountain has carried them in the past. Can’t be positive if they currently do.

They are carried by Cabela’s in the store as well as on their site. They have 4 styles and different prices. Check out the customer’s reviews…very informative. :tongue

P.S. They seem to be on sale, too.
