From Whitney Portal to LA

Has anyone else ever finished the trail at Whitney Portal and attempted to get back to L.A. via public transportation. I’ve looked but I’m unsure of how to get back toward Yosemite or down to Reno. If anyone has any info or thoughts I sure would appreciate it.

When we finished the JMT in '97 we had a shuttle arranged to take us back to Yosemite. You can check the Sierra Nevada forum for current shuttle info, http://sierrapacktrip.proboards19.com/index.cgi. I think they charged us about $220 for upto 4 people. I remember seeing a Greyhound sign in Lone Pine so you might check them. From Yosemite you can take the VIA Bus to Fresno ($20 at the time of our hike). I would guess you could get any type of transportation out of Fresno. Good luck and have a great hike.

I talked to two people who have run shuttle services around Whitney Portal and they have both gone out of business. Their only suggestions were the bus services which are going to be a real pain if you’re trying to go north.

Hi there - I am looking into the same thing…Greyhound definately does not run through Bishop any more…what I’ve found is bus service called C.R.E.S.T. that runs south from Bishop or Lone Pine on Mon, Wed, Fri…route ends in Ridgrecrest, from there you can take amtrack to LA…Looks like you have to leave Bishop at 9:15am and don’t arrive in LA till 7:30pm and of course have to be travelling on M, W, or F. Anyhow - it’s an option and the only one I’ve found! Check our www.395.com for more info. Take it easy!
