Frozen Waterfilter

I have the MSR Miniworks filter. On my last several winter trips I have been unable to use it, because it freezes. After usage I disassemble the system, drain excess water, and dry the parts. However, the cermaic filter still freezes. Anybody have any suggestions on how to keep the waterfilter usable in cold temperatures?

Its not so much the winter cold, that is if you had it freeze when you try and pump 33* water with it. My Hiker does that on the first pull, ice in the inlet every time. The pressure drop can make it freeze up instantly when the pump pulls it in. If it works and just freezes from air temps you’ll have to keep it in your coat, sleeping bag. Our use somethng like Aqua Mira in the winter.

sleep with it or put it inside a coat pocket to warm it up. Chemical treatments don’t work in cold water. The only back up is to boil the water or at least raise the temperature and add a chemical treatment.
