Georgia Pass impassible

I just got a note from one of our hardy folks who said Georgia is not negotiable right now without snowshoes. He had to honker down in Leadville. (6/26)

There were 2 dedicated guys prolly a day ahead of me when I did the pass last week. I saw their postholing intermittently. I haven’t seen two sets of tracks like that since but I’ve heard two “military” guys did it. Kinda curious what happened to them.

At the time I don’t think it was a matter of waiting until morning and skipping down the snow banks. Morning would come and go and you’d still have miles of trackless forest to wallow through.

I got over Georgia Pass on 6/25, but golly. The way up (SOBO) was no problem at all, but the N-facing way down was filled with snow drifts all the way to about 10300 elevation. I was mostly off trail, lost, post-holing, and heading generally down hill.

So now I am skipping Tenmile and Sec 8-10, resuming Sec 11 today.

Yesterday I met a woman who is NOBO on the CDT, which shares the trail for most of Sec 6-10, and she had actually made it thru CT Sec 7-10 before resupplying in Frisco. She said that the high places were still filled with deep snow, and moderate temperatures meant that even at 8AM she was post-holing.

Bud & Stefan crossed Georgia Pass 2 days ago, and made it over the 10 mile range this morning…they are having a blast…
