From the Georgia mountains down to just below Atlanta, many times if you dig more than a inch or so below the surface the earth can be a solid red clay. It’s actually more of a reddish-chestnut color. When wet, the stuff can be cut and stacked like blocks of hard cheese, is very heavy, and has poor drainage (my yard is like this!) Pine trees and azaleas love it but it’s not good for much else, you have to add sand and mulch. South of Atlanta the land gets more sandy.
But up on the AT, the land is much more broken-up and rocky with black decomposed plant matter and a mixture of soils, so you won’t see so much of the traditional “Georgia red clay” along the AT.

The red color is more noticible south of Atlanta, not in the mountains. But yeah, it’s red alright. Growing up my mom hated when I played in the mub because the stuff dosen’t come out very easily. :lol

"Well it’s under my nails
It’s under my collar
And it shows on my Sunday clothes
And I scrub that stuff
with the soap and the water
but the damned old dirt won’t go.
But when I walk through the Pearly Gate
will my gown will be gold instead?
Or just a red clay robe,
red clay wings,
and a red clay halo for my head?"
