Getting alcohol stove fuel on JMT

I’ve been trying to figure out how I’ll be getting a resupply on stove fuel on the JMT. I will only cook once a day, so if it’s absolutely necessary I can start with enough for the trip. Also, I saw that I could get some at Vermillion Valley, but with two of us and a nine dollar fee each way, I was hoping to bypass that stop. Can I mail it to Muir Trail Ranch with my food resupply? Or is that totally not allowed, with the postal service and what not?

Please let me know what others have done.

Many thanks!!!

Tang,
I’ve researched this a little bit and discovered this link if you had to mail denatured alcohol via ground only. Check out http://www.gottawalk.com/shipping_fuel.htm

I can also check out the Muir Ranch website at http://www.muirtrailranch.com/resupply.html
They sell alcohol fuel at the store.

I hope this helps. BTW, when are you planning your JMT?
I start southbound from TM Aug 30-12Sep. May be we can share a can of alcohol fuel at the Ranch.

SierraShade, did you check with the ranch to make sure that the stove fuel they have is alcohol, rather than Coleman or white gas fuel? Just want to make sure you aren’t unpleasantly surprised if they don’t have what you need when you get there. For what its worth, we had a good experience picking up a resupply at Muir Trail Ranch, although we didn’t check out the store while we were there. It is much closer to the trail than VVR, so it is very convenient, with the added plus that you won’t have to carry your resupply over Bear Ridge.

Hi Kanga,
Quote from Muir ranch website,“We have white gas and denatured alcohol for sale.” unquote.

BTW, It’s me. Rod from the SC Bay Area Chapter. I’m planning to solo SOBO JMT Aug 30-Sep 12. from TM. 12 days no resupply. Know of any convenient parking in Mammoth for 12 days close to Yart bus stops? I’m planning to park my truck at WP, hitch to Mammoth, stay in motel overnight and take the Yart to TM the following morning. Can you think of a better idea?

Hi SierraShade/Rod – good to hear from you. Check out the thread JMT from Mammoth. There is a Mammoth local who might be able to help you out, either with parking or a car shuttle. Otherwise your plan sounds good.

Thanks, I already made contact with Mtnbum. Great guy. As we made contact, he we planning to pick up some JMT hikers from Reno and take to Yosemite. Too bad he will be out of town during my trip.

Steve T.H.A.W knows a climbing friend who plans to finish his climb around Whitney the same day I exit. I hope to hook up with him and bumm a ride.

For what it’s worth - I do 2+ weeks every summer wandering around the Sequoia/Kings Canyon backcountry solo with no agenda - and no resupply. I have used an MSR Simmerlite for the past 3 years. Use approximately 30 ounces of white gas over 15 days.

The old alcohol / white gas stove debate. Alcohol stove/fuel is lighter for short trips, but somewhere there’s a crossover where the higher energy content of white gas makes it more efficient for longer trips, even though the stove is heavier.

Somehow I missed the fuel resupply on the Muir Trail Ranch website. Thanks a lot, all!!!

Sierra Shade-- I’m leaving Ohio on the 2nd of August. Hoping to be hiking by the 4th or 5th… so I’ll miss you.

Happy trails!!!
