Since we are doing a zero in Twin Lakes I’ve explored the possibility of going around the west tnd of Twin Lakes to avoid the long walk from town to the dam (5 miles) and then back along the other side of the lake a couple of miles before the CT heads up the hill.
There are two options:
-
From the Twin Lakes General Store walk west on Hwy 82 about 15 or 20 minutes. On the south side of the road is a pull-off and gate posted “US Government Property”. Follow a jeep road through the upper reaches of a marshy area (some wet areas) to the river. 15 minutes. At this point the river appears to be knee deep and flowing pretty fast. Upstream a short distance is a rapids (gravel & small rock bottom) that appears to be only ankle deep. This is now, early July. During the spring melt or after a big rain up the canyon it could be a very different story.
-
Go further west on Hwy 82 to Perry Park Campground (not sure how far this is, maybe two miles) where there is a bridge. A closer bridge at Willis Gulch washed out this spring.
From either crossing of the river there are trails connecting to the CDT where one can either take the CDT over Hope Pass or follow the CDT east along the lakeshore past the Interlaken Resort site and connect to the CT.
