How do I get my wife to undrstand the need to hike the AT? She can’t do it her self(madical reasons)and she hates it when I go off by my self for 2 days on the trail.Has anyone had a problem with a spouse not wanting you to hike the AT?

I had no problems because I spent years taking care of her needs (which were every bit as important as my need to hike the A.T.!)
Do you know what interest your wife and have you helped her fulfill her dreams? If not, forget the hike and take care of that first… there isn’t anything more fulfilling than knowing what I experienced first hand: the knowledge of an eagerly awaiting wife at journey’s end!
Best wishes to you and your family!

Maybe she wants to but just doesn’t know it. She could always drive the chase car? That’d be fun. No more hitching!

Hey, hawkhero…how about the opposite situation (which may be even trickier)that many of us wives face: getting the husband to let us go away and hike. I have been married to the same wonderful man for 42 years. He has no interest in hiking, on the Trail or anywhere else. He thinks we’re all friggin’ crazy. He definitely doesn’t like it when I go on a section hike (a thru hike is a HA HA if you know what I mean). How it has worked for us over the years is the understanding that we both have different interests and we respect that. We understand that we both need our space. He still doesn’t like it when I go. And then I feel bad. But if I didn’t go, he’d feel bad (cause I wouldn’t get to feel so happy on the Trail). It ain’t easy. So try different approaches, each situation and relationship is different. Hang in there!
