Getting pics on the computer

Has anyone found it easy to put your pictures online straight from your digital camera when you come to a town with internet access? Does the computer you use have to have picture software on it? I just got my camera and I’m not sure what the easiest way is.

The computer doesn’t have to have picture software to accept the raw data from your camera, just to view it. You could upload the picture files to a web based hard drive like http://xdrive.com/. When you get home they will all be stored and ready to be downloaded to your home PC. It’s a good option if you have a small memory card. Or you could get a gmail account and email the files to yourself. You get 2gigs of space free with gmail so it’s a good option if you dont take many pictures or if the camera doesnt have many megapixels. I guess you could set up multiple accounts to get extra storage but that might get complicated. Give someone at home the password to the xdrive or the gmail account and they can make prints or post the pics to your websites.

If you want to put the pictures on a website rather than archive them you will need to make sure the files are jpeg or another format that is accepted where ever you are posting them. They will probably be fine right out of the camera. You can post them without picture software but you might need to open them to see what they are before posting. There are a lot of fancy picture viewers but any windows computer will come standard with MSpaint which you can use to view photos, although it’s kind of crude. If it’s running xp you can always view as thumbnail or use the slideshow option. If your camera is like mine and your memory card is big enough you could store a small picture viewing program on your memory card and install it on any computer. Some public terminals wont let you install anything without admin access though. Where ever you go better have a fast connection because it would take me five hours to upload pics from my camera on a dialup.

If you need a gmail account post here and I will send you an invite or ten.

The easiest way to upload photos on the trail is to take your digital card to the local pharmacy or grocery photo place and get a CD. (it only takes a few minutes and costs $5 or less) Then you can use the CD to upload the ones you want.

Thanks Red Hat your idea sounds great, I never though of that and probably would have walked right past the photo dept.
