Getting sappy

Hey everyone!
It’s been so long since I’ve been involved with the trail, and I really started to miss it today. So I thought I’d check out my favorite trail site to see who’s around…OMG!!! You guys have made my day. Last year at this time I was packing, repacking and really questioning whether or not I should carry a trowel. I miss it so much. I’m so jealous of all who are preparing for their 2002 trek. The most important piece of advice that I can give to anyone is exactly what every previous thruhiker told me, take your time. Katahdin will always be there. “Beauty isn’t in the destination, it’s in the journey.” Enjoy, be kind to the enviroment, take time to smell the flowers. Take care all. Please feel free to email me if anyone has ANY questions, especailly about the trowel…hehehe.

Hi Pheonix! Long time since I’ve seen you or talked to you. Seems like the last time I saw you was Holy Family Hostel in Pearisburg. Let’s see… you, Fruitpie and Rufus, Blowin Sunshine and Shiggy. Good to see a familar name.

It’s so good to hear from you Moose! I lost sight of you at the same time I lost sight of Smiles and Fiddlehead. A bunch of us went back to Damasucs for trail days and we almost let Smiles and Fiddlehead take Rufus and Shiggy figuring that we’d catch 'em…thank goodness we didn’t do that…never did see them again. Remember sharing a shelter in the booming thunderstorms?? I believe it was the same crowd +Othra. What wonderful memories. I hope all is well.

OMG!!! Sleepy?..Hacksaw?..awwww, all you guys are here! Sleepy did you finish this year? I bet Keystone and Tubesteak would be very happy to hear from you…where did that Driva’ go anyways? ah…lol, good times. ANd what about you Hacksaw?..still clearing out the sleeping loft at Kincorra every night? What wonderful memories. Bob Peoples has a wonderful place there, best hosel on the trail if you ask me. I hope both of you are doing well…and I’ll be up for a game of euchre anyday, time, week, year…you name it. Yea, I was going to hike out two days in a row, but the cards kept me at that picnic table, the third day, I escaped. Had to stay for the Beltane!!! It’s almost time to be blessed again! Take care you two.

You betcha! Finished 10/14 which put me in that elite club of 7 month thru-hikers. I met up with Keystone again in Andover but he ended up finishing ahead of me. Unfortunately, I’ve lost touch with them. Now I’m thinking about Trail Days and looking around for another trail to hike.
I was trying to remember the rules for Euchre the other day. It makes me all misty eyed for those warm days on the trail, the Beltane celebration, the smell of rhododendrons in bloom… We were kings of the world then. Enjoy it class of 2002 - it’s over all too soon.

Oh yes, you are very right Sleepy, the times do go by too fast. I did a section hike in 2000 and spent a day at Kincora. The Tennesse boys grilled me on the redneck quiz. I scored a -10 points. When I shaved my beard in Damascus, it became a -20. I make a lousy southerner. Of course, I didn’t make all that great a yankee either.

Well, being Irish, time at Kincora was perfect for me especially. Bob simply is one of the gems of the trail. Too bad they can’t clone him.

Anyone of the class 2002, take time to get the Tennessee Eastman patch for trail maintaining. It is a great way to pay the trail back, Bob back, and spend more worthwhile time in Kincora. I did in 2000 and got my patch. It was worth it! Be sure to ask Bob Peoples how one can earn one.

The above comments are absolutely correct—the Class of 2002 should take note: Kincora hostel, in Dennis Cove, TN, is an amazing place, and Bob and Pat Peoples, who run the place, are about the finest folks you’ll meet on your whole trip. One would be crazy to stay anywhere else.

PHOENIX! Hey, Howya’ doin’?

Well, I haven’t been back to Kincora since the Beltane week, but I think I might just drive up this year and get blessed and see about working with Bob for a few days. That is a really cool thing to do. I missed the work party after Trail Days with my leg in a cast from my ankle to my butt from a stress fracture/knee damage going up Mt. Rogers. It’s better now but other considerations will limit my trail time to probably a week, maybe two around Trail Days. Hope to see you guys up there. (Hey, I can clean out “The Place” as well as I can Kincora! LOL)

Sleepy, you gonna’ get out any this year? get in touch. Anyone heard from Derby? Did he OR the hat make it to the K?
I hear from the Barefoot Sisters occasionally, they made it back to Katahdin in late September, I think.

You know, that was a really cool bunch that was around Kincora during the Beltane Week. I’d like to do that again!
