Getting to Superior

I had to hitch hike out of there because there was no bus service
Do tour buses go to Boyce Thompson arboretum from the Phoenix area? Will Greyhound stop there or in Superior if you ask them?

Yeah, I have the same problem.

I’m guessing you’re not talking about Superior, Wisconsin, which is about 55 miles north of here. Oh, well, good luck.

Hey David,

I did the AZT in '03 and took a couple of rest days in Phoenix. The hotel I ended up at wasn’t far from the Greyhound station. I walked over the day before and bought a ticket to Superior (or Globe). I can’t remember which was the first stop. I asked the gal who sold me a ticket the same question you are asking. She said its up to the driver. When I boarded the next morning I asked the driver if he would let me off at Boyce Thompson and he just grunted. I wasn’t sure whether to take that as a ‘yes’ or ‘no’. The whole ride I wondered if he was going to stop. I suspected not since the ticket gal said they aren’t supposed to do that (make unscheduled stops). That made perfect sense. I took his grunt for a ‘no’.

As we approached Boyce-Thompson he started to slow and pulled over on the shoulder. I gave him a hearty thanks as I got off… he gave me another grunt. I’d say give it a try. Otherwise you can hitch back to the trailhead. That segment was the start of the neatest wilderness part of the trail for me.

Greyhound no longer runs through Superior. Arizona Value Shuttle in Apache Junction once told me they’d be willing to do a Superior run, but have since changed their tune. Hitchhiking may indeed be the only remaining option.

Actually, if the goal is simply to get to Superior from the trail, you could walk the old Magma rail line, which parallels US 60 to the north. The motel in Superior is under new management and will now shuttle guests back to the trail.

If you knew when you could post a plea for help here and maybe some kind sole would shuttle you in return for your stories.
