Getting to the Northern trailhead

I’m likely to try a Southbound End-to-End trip this summer. What options should I explore for getting to the trail. I will probably use bus transportation as much as I can.

As far as I know there is no bus transport to newport this year. You could get to St Albans by Amtrak and then take a cab, but that would cost ton of money. Once you get to North troy, its still a few miles to the beginning.

Vermont Transit Busslines scratched Newport off their list making it harder to get to the Long Trail near North Troy. There are locals all along the LT who’ve done shuttling of hikers in the past. You might be able to arrange a shuttle from St. Albans or maybe a town near the northern trail like Middlebury or Montpelier; they all have bus service. My information on Shuttlers is at least three years old so I won’t post it here but I got it from the Green Mountain Club’s End-To-End Guide and that is available on their website: http://www.greenmountainclub.org/pubs.asp. The new editions usually become available in April.

Thanks for the info. I am wondering about hitching in. Are rides few and far between, or if I had a sign and a pack would people be likely to drive me towards the trail head (that’s worked nicely for the NH and Maine AT for me in the past)?

Thanks also for the info on the end-to-enders guide. I’ve been watching for the 2005 edition to appear.

If you were to hitch from a mid-state trail town to the terminus I’d think you’d get up north pretty quick. From North Troy to Journey’s End is all secondary and back roads. Its really out in the sticks. The whole area is on the edge of nowhere. When I finished my northbound hike I walked right to town. From North Troy it took about three rides to get to Newport.

Pedxing- When you know more about when you’ll be hiking send me an e-mail. I live in North Woodstock NH and might be able to help out with a ride. Its still about two hours to Journey’s End but its an easy drive.

I completed the trail SOBO this November. You can take Vermont Transit or amtrak to White River junction. There is a hostel in a hotel in town you can stay at ($19)named after some president(Coolidge (sp.)I beleive) There are two small bus lines (Van service) that get you to newport center. One is Stage caoch and the other I forgot. Call the GMC office and they give you the “ride corionator”.BTW the guy gave me the wrong bus times so double check. I hitched to newport center but do not hitch on the interstate stay at the bottom of the ramp. I got a $79 tickect. The end to end guide lists Steve I lost my info on him but he give you a free ride to the trail head from newport center. Good luck and enjoy. The LT was one of my all time favoite trips.
