Getting to the trail!

Two JMT hikers looking to rideshare from San Fran to Happy Isles circa July 24th (we’re morning-of permitters, so we’re flexible!) also interested in other ideas about getting there (bus-Amtrak-bus/shuttle seems to be common?) Thanks!

The JMT is a beautiful walk, once you solve the logistics. Last year, I took Amtrak to Merced, then caught the YARTS bus up into the park from the Merced Amtrak station. Worked well for me.
A bigger problem for you will be where to stay in the park while you wait for your permit. There are several backpackers campgrounds, plus the Ahwahnee, Yosemite Lodge and Curry Village tent cabins. It’s not unusual for all of them to sell out months in advance.
You can try their website, http://www.yosemitepark.com/Reservations.aspx, but it is not updated real-time. So availability may come and go without ever showing up on the site. Better is to call, (801) 559 4884.
If there’s nothing in the park, you’ll have to stay outside the park entrance; El Portal or Mariposa both have rooms but at peak season rates.
Once you get on the trail, it will be worth it.

If you arrive in the park via YARTS and keep your receipt, you can stay a night in the backpackers camp as a last resort. If you arrive via car, you’re expected to find your own accommodations outside the park.

I couldn’t find it anywhere on the website, but that was what I was told by the rangers when I went through the same thing in 2008.

Camp 4 is the walk in campground, if you get there really early get in line for a spot, line usually forms around 6 am, ranger comes around 8. If you get there at night most campers are cool enough to let you throw down in their site for the night.
