Getting to Waterton Canyon

Hey guys,

I will be starting a thru hike on the 12th or 13th. Anyone got tips about getting to the trailhead, or where to stay in Denver for cheap for a couple of days while I get used to the altitude?

Where are you coming from? I live here in Denver and I am starting a thru hike right around then but I’ll be skipping the first segment because I have my dog. Haven’t decided if I am doing the alternate route or not yet-27 of 28 segments is still a success in my book! Anyway, if you want to connect let me know. Despite my bear posts I really am normal I swear  I led a trip of 11 people to the Grand Canyon this year and they can all vouch for my sanity!!

Its easy to get to Waterton Canyon from the airport or from anywhere in denver.

From the airport get on the bus going to denver. $12 bucks
Either stay the night in Denver or go straight to the trail.
Get on rail line and head to lileton station (I believe that’s the name of the station). $1
Hope on bus that goes to Lockhead Martin. $2
Get off bus right at gate to Lockhead Martin and you are right at the start of the trail. The bus driver will help you know when to get off. Just ask. You can’t get into the the gate for Lockhead Martin anyways.

The two times I’ve went and hiked the CT I’ve always stayed at the VQ hotel next to the football stadium. Its cheap. Its a mile from REI and its right next to the rail line with easy access to get to the buses that will take you to the trail head. The hotel also has a free shuttle that will take you anywhere within a four mile radius.

Considering where the airport is located and how far away the trail head is 15 bucks to get there was a great deal.

…to Lockheed Martin.

You have to take the airport bus to Market Street station, walk to the light rail station, take the light rail to the Mineral Street Station and from there take a taxi to Waterton that is roughly $20.

You can also walk there from Mineral Street Station. Details here:

Orrrr…you could give me a call and I could give you a ride from DIA directly to Waterton Canyon. I provide custom hiker shuttles to CT/CDT hikers around the Front Range. I charge $50 for DIA to Waterton TH. Jason, 720-934-9245
