Getting too and from Durango

I am looking for advice on the best way out of Durango at the end of the trail. I see it’s possible to fly out, but with an uncertain arrival date I’m reluctant to commit to an unrefundable ticket. Does anyone know if it’s simpler to get to Denver or Albuquerque from Durango for a flight out.

Also, I see getting off the trailhead is a 3-4 mile walk into Durango-- is it far from there to public transportation?

I’ve looked at various websites and the guidebook, all of which give excellent general information–I’m just wondering if anyone who has done it has more specific advice. thanks–Jo

Yes, I’ve done it. I hitched a ride from the end of the trail to the hostel in Durango. I wasn’t comfortable hitching when I started, but by the end of the trail I enjoyed doing it. The people that pick you up are friendly and usually hikers themselves. Stayed in town for two nights and then took a taxi service (the woman who owns the hostel will have info) to the airport for $25.

I didn’t book a flight out of Durango until about three weeks into the hike, because by then I had an idea of my average miles and when I’d likely finish.

Hi Jakob-- I’m curious about booking the flight out of Durango 3 weeks out on the trail – sounds like you might save a little on the airfare. I’m Considering buying a ticket out of Denver now to take advantage of lower prices and then buying a ticket from Durango when I get there. But your scenario could work too.

Thank you!
