Sometimes you can count on the backpacker/biker sites at the lakes campgrounds that are I think 1st come 1st served.
I showed up in early July & got some ridiculous itineraries; such as a 9 mile day then a 26 mile day ! Needless to say, I stealth camped during the 26 miler & luckily wasn’t caught! Bear canisters or ursacks are a good idea if you can’t be sure to make the long days to official sites where there are bearpoles. As many have said before: you have to go to a ranger station to get the permit & watch a bear movie, “Gentle Ben” I think. The closest one to E. Glacier is 2 Medicine which you can take an old 30s style touring bus to for a few bucks… get there as early as possible in the day, preferrably a Sat, Sun, Monday, etc… or go to or wherever you want to start your hike to get your permit & hope for the best. If you are stuck in the campground, at least they have ranger talks around the bonfire each nite I think. The main camps have stores with lots of hiker food for sale.
