Glastenbury Mountain

Thsi question is for those people who are familiar with the AT/LT in Vermont, specifically Sec. 8 over Glastenbury Mt. We are going to do a backpack of this section in a couple of weeks, going north to south. 6-8 miles a day is about our speed. I know that you are not supposed to camp near Hell Hollow Brook (water supply for Bennington) but are there any other places to camp between there and Goddard Shelter near the summit of Glastenbury Mt. I understand that water is a problem for most of that section, but are there places where the terrain will allow pitching a tent.

Last year on my thru hike I stayed a mile or two south of Glastenbury Mtn. It was one of several spots I found. Coming from your direction it would be on the right. Hope you have a great hike. socks

There is a shelter .3 miles south of the mtn and a shelter 4 miles to the north. There is also a shelter 1.6 miles south of Hell Hollow Brook. What is your starting point? It is hard to remember where we camp in that section because we were doing some big miles through that section.

There’s an excellent tent site below the fire tower atop the mountain. Water can be obtained from the big spring at the shelter about .3 tenths of a mile south.

Between Goddard Shelter and Hell Hollow there are a few tent sites, at least three. The last one before Hell Hollow is at Porcupine Lookout which is about 5.7 miles from Goddard. (carry water) After that camping is prohibited until Maple Hill (power lines) and I can’t recall a good spot from Maple Hill to Melvile Nauheim. Between Goddard and Melville Nauheim it’s 8.5 miles with a lot more downhill than up.
