A friend told me that German doctors are saying that glucosamine can ruin your liver. I can not find anything like that on the internet. I have seen glucosamine mentioned here. Has anyone heard any negatives associated with it?

Just downed mine…since I remembered, and a few fish oils to get my HDL up. Check out this link. We used it on the AT in '01, sniff.

You read me preaching about it too. I don’t go through the day without mine (3 per day). The doctor told me 4 years ago I would never be able to walk the trail. I had trouble walking to the bathroom in the mornings (40 years of playing sports). My brother told me about Glucosamine and I thru hiked with my wife last year. I have blood work done twice a year and in 4 years I’ve had no sign of side effects. Good stuff. Me too Bushwhack sniff sniff

I’ve been using Glucosamine daliy for the last two years on the advice of “my” sports medicine Dr. My knees were so bad that i had a hard time going around the block, now I am vertually pain free in the knees. Before I started to take it I read all I could find, online and elce where. My friend is a pharimices and he passed on what he could find as well. I don’t recall any advirse effects. It has made a world of difference.:happy

I think everyone who has had knee/joint problems and has tried glucosamine has nothing but excellent things to say. It did wonders for my knee. One thing I would say is that I used it for maybe 6 months and pain went completely away several weeks after I began, but I kept taking it. Once I stopped taking it the pain did not return and I have not taken any in probably 4 years. Knee used to hurt bad enough it would REALLY REALLY hurt just going up a flight of stairs. I would encourage you all that have been taking it for a long time to try and stop taking it and see how your body does. I quit and the pain did not return.

What’s a good brand? I’ve heard Puritan’s Pride glucosamine/condroiten is good. And that you gotta watch out for brands with low levels of condroiten.

The stuff worked for me. At 65 years old i started my thru in 2000. Got to Fontana Dam and had to leave the trail with terrible knee pain.
Started to take glucosamine, returned to the traik in “01” and finished the AT with no knee pain.

Get a good name brand. You may want to check Consumer Report. Get just the Glucosamine without the condroiten. The condroiten adds a lot to the price and has not been proven to help. My younger brother has won the National Strength Coach Award 2 times and has several national collegiate champion ship rings (UT, Miami, LSU) and he puts all of the college athletes on glucosamine. They use GNC brand. I’ve bought mine at Sam’s in bulk for years. Flame and I took 3 a day during our thru-hike last year.
