I am extremely excited about hiking the trail and am planning a Southbound thru-hike. My concern is that I dont have anyone who make the time comitment to do it with me. How safe is it to hike the trail alone; that is regarding bears and other animals, people, and injuries. Thanks for any help. I’m just getting started on this

You won’t have the crowds like the NOBOs starting at Springer but you’ll still see plenty of section hikers, day hikers, boy scouts, etc on your trip.

The trail is safer than any city.

Even a southbounder is going to have a little company. If you really want to hike with someone , just plan on starting together. Few people who start together finish together.

The trail social life is very fluid. I met a guy on day one of my hike and then didn’t see him again for over 1200 miles.

If you are really anxious, put the word out as your start day nears and ask others what their start days are. You will more then likely find someone who is starting around the same time.

Have fun!!
