Golite Trail Shoes

I am NOBO PCT this spring and want to know if anyone has had any experience with these shoes. I am looking at the sun dragon shoe specifically. I believe they just came out so there are problaby not too many people who have tested them out. I want a durable lightweight breathable shoe for my second shoe on the PCT so somewhere in the mid sierra I will switch out of my Montrail hardrocks to these Golites.

just curious, but why switch out ? The hrs’ are an excellent shoe…still lite and very durable.

I have a pro-deal that grants me %30 off wholesale price so about $40. A new pair of HR would cost me more than double! I really like my HRs too. Right now I have around 150-200 miles on them.

I bought a pair of the GoLite Shoes - the Trail Fly - on 8 March.

I started a Thread at backpackinglight.com about the new GoLite Shoes. You can read the thread at:

The shoes are “NOT Trail Ready” out of the box.

The shoes hurt my ankles and knees on my first 2 mile walk with them. The shoes don’t come in half sizes and I wear a size 11. My 11 to 11.5 were a bit large. My first try at a fix was a new pair of Superfeet insoles. This helped the pain but created a new problem. I tried other insoles from three pair of The North Face trail runners I have and after many different combinations of insoles ( as many as three insoles at one time and two pair of liner socks I was getting close to a good fit and about no pain.

The Golite Shoes were starting to remind me of what a very “High Maintenance” girl friend was like.

With a lot of break-in time and trying many different insole / sock combinations I am about as close as I expect I will get.

My current fix is two pair of The North Face insoles, two light pair of liner socks and a slight change in how the shoe laces are laced. I now have about 100 miles on the shoes and might now try a long hike with them. I have started walking between 8 and 12 miles a day.

If you have the time to break-in the shoes and put some miles on them before you need them on your hike they might work for you. I also tried the Sun Dragon shoes and thought the sole felt Thin. Walking around the store wearing them I could feel the “lug” things through the shoe sole and it felt like I was walking on rocks.

I am trying hard to make these shoes work as I like a lot of the design ideas that went into this new line of shoes.
