I’m doing a section from 19E to Damascus this month and will have too much time for the distance. Looking for interesting blue blaze side trips (e.g., a waterfall) in the area.

Get to 19E the afternoon before you start. This will allow you to spend the night at the Mountain Harbour B&B. 1-866-772-9494. A nice couple from Ca. run this hostel. You will have the best breakfast of your entire life. I’m not kidding. Sleep in the renovated and comfy barn or lux it up in their lovely home. Hit the trail belly full. Just out of 19E the trail needs a lot of maintenance, I think the local kids party there and it’s kind of a mess. Don’t worry soon you’ll be ‘out there’. You will be going by some great waterfalls. The Jones falls is very cool just 4 miles into your journey. It’s only .1 miles off to the right and is marked with a sign. You can climb up the right side pretty easily and hang out by the big rock. Later that day you’ll be passing Hardcore Cascade and the newest shelter on the AT. It was built by Bob Peoples and volunteers from this summer’s NOBOs. I would suggest staying there because otherwise you’ll have a huge first day. The next day You can visit Kincorra, the Peoples’ famous hostel. Bob and Pat are some of the nicest trail legends and gracious hosts. It’s located just down Dennis Cove road .2 miles to the left. Stay there too, make appropriate donation. From Kincorra it’s a short hop to the Laurel Falls right along the trail. This is one of the most famous falls on the whole AT. I think it’s the biggest per water volume. Watauga lake would be a fine place to stay as there’s a campsite about a third of the way around from the “beach”. Also there’s a slew of shelters every 6 to 10 miles apart all the way to Damascus. About 15 miles before Damascus there’s a road crossing called Low Gap US 421. If you’re still interested in another hostel, Barry, Danaiah and their son Isaiah have a little shangri-la called “Angelwood”. They stay under the radar so I can’t tell you how to find them. Try looking Angelwood up on Google. The last ten miles of your trip are all downhill and easy. Nice way to roll into “the friendliest Trail Town” Buy an AT guidebook it will have all this info and more to help you plan your trip. Have fun, you’ve selected a great section.

Thanks for the info. I was worried that this section wouldn’t live up to the last section I did, from Erwin to 19E.
