Goosebumps - Appalachian Trail

I was going to post this on the string “The Unsettling Truth” but it seems that post directed toward a military discusson. So I decided to do it here. (Maybe we can all have some cool campfire stories, eh?)

I was curious on who all has had creepy encounters on the trail? AT or other trails. I am asking for ghost, UFO or Bigfoot realted topics. YEAH, YEAH, I see some eye brows raise but I know some of you who spend a lot of time in the woods has had some weird stories and they would make for great stories around the campfire at night.

I was just checking out the Bigfoot Field Research Organization website and looked at their data base for sighting in North Georgia. Story is too long here but you may want to check it out for something different. Go to BFRO.org and click on to the database link. Click on to Georgia than Lumpkin County. Pretty cool story. It happened in 1985 when the Military Helicopter crashed there. And it is not too far from the Trail.

Maybe some of the “Bear” stories are not bears after all. Like the one I read where a hiker hung his food bag 9 feet off the ground and the next morning it was gone? CREEEPPPY. Just for fun. Any stories like this?

Man, there are so many things in those woods. About 3 different nites in N.C. when I was all alone in the woods ,I heard breathing just outside my tent. And then a flash of lite across the ground ,just outside. Another time 2 of us kept hearing this small child crying, it was about midnite and we were in Virginia. If you go out there, dont sleep alone but if you do sleep by yourself just remember what you have read here. Have a nice trip

Just past Hot Springs, if the moon is just right, you can hear voices in your head thru mental telepathy. Voices from another star system. ONe night somebody was trying to reach me and the next morning I found a pack of Marlboro’s and a couple of cigs on the ground with a flashlight. THe weird thing was that the flashlight had no batteries…:smokin

I brought this topic up because I read in Nimblewell Nomads book “Ten Million Steps” that at one of the shelters (do not remember which one) a hiker died years ago and he comes around the shelter about 5:00 am in the form of a whipor will. Has anyone else heard of that story? Sounds to be a good way to get the day started. OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH!

Thats in TN I think…at least the four different times I have been in Vendaventure Shelter that sum bitch comes by and goes ballistic with its calls at 3-5 a.m…its either a ghost or a family or Whippers that like to wake up hikers…cuz its been happening there for years.

My apologies - I never intended to have that post turn into a military topic.

I think what is a bit spooky (and keeps you awake) are at those shelters in Virgina, Maryland (and,I’m sure, others) where the Cicadas start rubbing their legs at night and make a deafening roar. I always thought they were crickets, but apparently not.

At any rate - just hearing those sounds can make for some spooky times. If you ever have the urge, try doing some night-time Trail hiking and see if their sounds don’t raise the hair on your arm.
