Does anyone know or recommend GPS for the JMT? I’m good with map and compass, and have read almost every book written on the trail. I have an older etrex for waypoints and such, but should we spring for a new Garmin with downloads, ect…IS IT NEEDED??? If it’s not needed, i’d rather go without.

On the JMT, it’s really really not needed.

If your going before the end of June it might be good this year, otherwise definitely not needed. The JMT is the freeway of trails.

Yeah and there is water in small streams, rivulets lakes, raging creeks, every 100yds or so. The JMT is probably one of the easiest well maintained trails there is,that I’ve done. Granted big uphills and down, maybe snow this year maybe alot, you’ll get used to the altitude. Especially if you dont start the same day you come up from sea level. The only really challenge for the JMT is just being able to carry the weight of all the food you need. All the trail junctions are well signed with JMT north south. The only spot I didnt see an actual JMT sign was like the first mile in Yosemite.

Oh yeah and about 30 times a day you can say, “Nice Marmot”

Don’t need it, or the compass, and really don’t need maps unless you want to check progress or do side trips. Its practically a highway with exit signs. Of course, a ridiculously beautiful highway.
