If any Sobos need any help getting through Shenandoah let us know. We live in Charlottesville and are about 20-30 minutes from the southern end of SNP at Afton/Waynesboro.

This sounds like a great time to hike through SNP. While all the concessionaires will be closed the park will be limited to hikers so no crowds during a beautiful time of the year. If I can get the time off from work I will be heading down.

If you are caught recreating in Shenandoah National Park while it is closed the fine is up to $500 and up to 6 months in jail. Law Enforcement Rangers are considered “essential” and are not furloughed.

But they are allowing hikers through the national parks. You can’t use the facilities including the campgrounds but the backcountry huts and shelters are open.

“But they are allowing hikers through the national parks. You can’t use the facilities including the campgrounds but the backcountry huts and shelters are open.”
How do you know this and where did you hear or see it?
If so, would you still need to fill out a permit in the parks?
To my mind, “closed” means CLOSED. Especially where the federal government is concerned.
Henry
Since these rangers aren’t cashing paycheck either weather they’re in the field or not, I would have a pretty good argument in court. Maybe I can say I was enforcing the rules since the govt cant get their **** together…
NO PAY NO TICKET
What does the rangers not getting paid have to do with you ignoring the park closure and entering anyway?
The rangers might not be getting paid, but their handcuffs are still real, as are their citation books and subsequent federal fines.
Knock yourself out. Be a patriotic heroic free man and go for it. Let me know how that works out for you.
I wouldn’t try it until we have definite accurate non-contradictory information from a dependable source.

…Only a “Government” would think it’s needed to take a walk in the woods. The woods will be there long after the Governments are all gone.
paul
Well yeah. Of course the forests will be here later.
But for now, in some parts of the forest, there are guys with guns and handcuffs and ticket books saying those woods are legally CLOSED.
I understand the closure of the trail in the parks, but what’s not clear is whether the AT easements, which are technically NPS lands, are also closed to hikers.
Anyone got clarity on this? They’re probably only closed if someone is there to tell you so, but the ATC notice claims 700 miles of trail are technically closed, which probably includes the easements under NPS jurisdiction.
Henry
Despite the impasse in Washington, rest assured that the AT did NON slide off a cliff, collapse or get swallowed by the ocean. It is open for business! I was just on it!!! It’s still working like a charm!

I treid hiking in Shenandoah National Park over the weekend and on the way out was stopped by a park ranger. I was told in no uncertain terms that the park --including the AT-- was closed and that if I were found there again I would be detained and ticketed ($125 fine).

You need to weigh the cost of a potential fine against the cost of transportation to return to a section of trail to be completed later on. For some folks, paying the fine would undoubtedly be a bargain.

when the congress and senate live up to their oaths of office, then and only then will I give any consideration to their mandates. It is called civil disobedience. grow a set and let them know who OWNS our national treasures. It sure shouldn’t be a bunch of corrupt, bought and paid for politicians !!

I’ve read the NPS release statements and literature and as far as I can tell the AT seems fine to travel.
Here’s why…
-the releases never state or imply that all park patrons and visitors have to leave.
-the releases only state that visitors staying at hotels and campgrounds have to make arrangements outside the park and have 48 hours to leave.
-the releases also state that all park entrances will be closed EXCEPT thruways (it didn’t say anything about highways, roads, or even trails.) I believe the Appalachian National Scenic Trail is worthy of being called a thruway.

Don’t forget the occupant of that other branch of government over at the White House when it comes to living up to an oath of office! And, by the way, the Senate IS the congress, along with the House of Representatives.
