I found a GPS in Maine this summer. I believe it belongs to a thru hiker because it has waypoints from Georgia to Maine. If you are the owner contact me by email and we can verify the one I have is yours and arrange its return.

As a user of a gps'r for all of my trips, I know that someone is unhappy about losing the data from an epic trip. It may be possible to determine the owner by contacting the manufacturer. Garmin keeps good records and helps owners to recover lost and stolen devices. Many units have a 'welcome' dialog that is displayed at power up - phone numbers and names could be displayed. And finally, look at the very first waypoints, that might point to the home of the owner.

I once bought a "brand new" Garmin from REI in Raleigh which had "never been opened". Turns out the first waypoint was the home of the salesman not far from the store! He had some 'splaining to do on that one! I got another new one of course. REI is great about making things good.

I am sure the owner has an idea where he or she lost it. I would rather not say more than in Maine.
I checked all the pages to look for owner info and also waypoints for clues of where the owner is from.
I will call the manufacturer to see if they can help find the owner.

I discovered who the owner of the GPS is. It took a little detective work but I have good results. Here is what was done: we took the waypoints on the GPS from before Springer Mountain and plugged them into Google Earth. All of these waypoints were in Colorado mostly along some hiking trails. Fortunately one was at a residence, we then did a search on the residence. With that we came up with the name of the family at that house. I then did a Trailjournals search for someone with the last name of the residents. As luck would have it there was someone in Trailjournals by that name who lists the town in Colorado.
I just spoke to the owner of the GPS and I will be mailing it out in the morning.
