I bought the MaPTECH A.T map set which is suppose to be compatiable with popular GPS units. The GPS unit i have is a Garmin GPSMAP 60CS, but the sofware from MAPTECH is older so it has Garmin, but not the new model . does anyone have a clue on how to make the two work? thanks!

Just curious: In what way are you going to use the GPS on the AT?

I am legally blind so maps are harder to see for me. With the GPS I can zoom in. When i come to a road it would be nice to see if it is the correct road that will take me to the scheduled resupply or not. Thanks for answering my question though :mad

Anthony,

I just asked a question. There was no sarcasm or insults. No need for an angry face. Was honestly curious.

Figure with the technical quetion you asked you may be updating the maps, doing a survery, a personal project or something else. You must admit it is unusual to ask such a high specialized question about GPS use on the AT. So, just curious as to why.

Sorry Mags, it wasn’t directed towards you. I know your post wasn’t an insult. I took Virginian’s post as an insult. I agree with you, normally a GPS would be worthless on the A.T. I will just be using it as an expensive map that I can zoom in and see where I am at. A simple topo map could do this, but I have bad vision and will need the GPS to zoom in. I figured this would be helpful when crossing roads and seeing if the road brings me to the correct reapply town. There may be some other things I could do with it, that is the main thing.

Anthony,

First the good new, the Garmin is a nice unit and the Maptech software is great. Now the bad news, you can only upload Garmin mapping software to a Garmin GPS. You can create routes on the Maptech software and upload them to the GPS. You can save tracks from the Garmin GPS to Maptech maps.

You’ll need to buy the Garmin, Mapsource, US TOPO 24K, National Parks, East to load the topo maps into your GPS. This version has all the topo for the AT from GA-ME. With 56 Mb of memory you’ll be able to save a large map set onto the GPS. For the hell of it, I own this map set, I figured you can save all the topos for the AT from Waynesboro, VA to Katahdin. This should mean you’ll have to have access to your CD and a PC/ laptop to replace the maps with the next section your working on. These maps will load in addition to the base map pre-loaded in the GPS.

Good luck on your hike,

od is right that you will need mapsource to upload to the garmin unt. As the owner of a Garmin Vista, I will tell you you will see a paper map much better than the screen on your GPS. The GPS has a screen of an inch or two square versus the map which is a couple of feet square. Detail is better on the map as well.

I also would say the Mapsource plotting capabilites are pretty bad. Maptech is good at freehand routing. Upload those routes to your GPS. Upload the Mapsource maps seperately if you still decide to go the GPS route.
